For No Reason at All, a Tribute to the Weekly World News

by Jane Diane Matthews on March 24, 2010

Sleeping late. Eating peanut butter with a spoon. Fist pumping to episodes of the Jersey Shore. These are just a few of the guilty pleasures I like to explore on occasion. They are all harmless enough in moderation. In massive quantities the results can be quite frightening. That is how I feel about my obsession with the Weekly World News.

My heart still aches for the authentic, newspaper version that was found near check the check out lanes in grocery stores. The black and white paper was published out of Florida from 1979 to 2007. During their run, there were such captivating headlines such as “Giant Tune Eat Men Off Horseback of the Coast of China,” and “Woman Gives Birth To 200 LBS Hairball.”   The news they published was hysterical, however the politics the supported made me cringe. Hence, making this rag and extremely guilty pleasure.

Even when I tried to kick the habit for good, I got sucked back in. Especially when I tried to chill out with one of my preferred “craptastic” films, “I Married an Axe Murderer.”  Since I can watch the film over and over, there is a constant tease of a fix. Main plots of the movie hinge on the crucial information in “the paper” and I was once again hooked back in.

But like every other “newspaper” the publication has nearly vanished. There are still traces of the tabloid lingering about. The Sun, prints a limited addition and there is the website. But it is not the same, not at all. For me, the WWW of my youth is dead. I’m just paying my tribute to the deceased a couple years too late.
