What’s Up with Meatless Mondays?

by Jane Diane Matthews on May 25, 2010

For decades, I have committed my dining efforts to eating lower on the food chain. My choice has spared the life of countless farm animals and has provided me with one of the most healthy types of diet plans. Who knew that my daily food selection process is now part of a larger movement called Meatless Mondays..

Meatless Mondays is a newish, international trend. According to the Meatless Monday website (in conjunction with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.), the goal of the project is to encourage vegetarian dining so individuals to reduce “meat consumption by 15%, in order to improve personal health and the health of the planet.”

There are tons of benefits for those who opt for a meat free diet. Better nutrition and reduced health expenses are only a few of the perks associated with eating more beans and legumes for protein. However, the one that everyone can relate to now is that eating lower on the food chain can cost substantially less than maintaining an animal based diet.

Removing meat from your diet can be extremely challenging for those who have relied on the substance for years. Exploring the web for recipes and subscribing to Vegetarian Times will help you manage the task more easily. Only after doing your research should you dare go shopping. Only then should you stock up on dried beans, whole grains, fresh vegetables and even protein rich pasta like Barilla Plus.

For those who are already embracing low animal diets, then you know what I am talking about. One treat we can use to further diversify our dining options is this yummy sounding recipe for a Smoky Tempeh Bacon and Pan Roasted Pear Sandwich with Creamy Roasted Garlic Spread from Mama Earth Rocks.

This dish pays homage to my favorite fruit  the pear, so for those wondering why I went on today’s tangent, I have now come full circle.
